After graduating from Harvard, J.F.K. joined the Navy with his brother Joe. He made Lieutenant (Lt.) and was assigned to the South Pacific as the commander of a patrol torpedo boat.
On August 2nd, 1943, while his crew was on patrol in the water they came across a Japanese destroyer. As it was too late to move out of the way of the gigantic destroyer, the patrol ship was crushed and killed two of Lt. Kennedy's men. As flames erupted, the men jumped off, as Lt. Kennedy injured his back on impact. As one of Kennedy's men were wounded, he towed the man to the closest island was they would be rescued after six days.
Lt. Kennedy's brother, Joe, would die a year later as hiss plane blew up during a mission in Europe.
When J.F.K. returned home, he was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for leadership and courage. After his brother's death, J.F.K. decided to run for Congress in Massachusetts and would win in 1946. He would continue to close for three terms for six years. In 1952, J.F.K. was elected to the United States Senate.
